Cultural practitioners from civil society and public institutions
Advocacy for culture is a pioneering theme in the South Mediterranean region. Although advocacy initiatives reached a mature level in fields of equal opportunities or human rights, there is still little awareness about the value of advocacy to promote culture amongst cultural professionals. In addition, the growing number of those who are convinced of the effectiveness of advocacy lack the proper skills that would allow them to develop an efficient action to attain their objectives.
Leading an advocacy initiative that aims to influence decision-making processes requires a proper methodology and the right discourse that promotes the value of culture as an asset that can be further developed through building strategic alliances as well as measured and evaluated both economically and socially based on a group of defined indicators. It involves opening doors of dialogue between civil society actors in the culture sector and the respective government institutions. It also involves looking into the cross cutting dimension of culture and the necessity to connect with other fields.
This thematic peer-to-peer regional workshop is the first in a cycle of two workshops, where the participants are professionals from both the civil society and public institutions who share the desire and the determination to play an active role in the cultural scene.
The objective of the workshop is threefold:
- Raise awareness about the necessity for advocacy actions and their potential for effecting change
- Provide methodological tools to design and manage one’s advocacy initiative
- Contribute to build a critical discourse to promote culture and provide some indicators for evaluating advocacy actions.
