SouthMed WiA moves towards greater gender equality in the Southern Mediterranean audiovisual sector: Call for proposals
The deadline for submission is 15 September at 21:00 (GMT)
SouthMed WiA is a project funded by the European Union within the framework of the regional programme Med Film. The project is launching its first call for proposals in order to support three to four projects that promote gender equality in the audiovisual sector of seven Southern Mediterranean countries: Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, and Tunisia.
SouthMed WiA seeks to promote the role and image of women in the Southern Mediterranean audiovisual sector. In this call for proposals, categories include fiction, documentary, and animation, to be released theatrically, on television, or online.
The call for proposals seeks projects addressing issues related to gender equality and the under-representation of women in the audiovisual sector, both on screen and behind the camera, including the perpetuation of stereotypes related to the image of women in Arab societies. Its ultimate goal is to influence widespread cultural attitudes and public opinion.
SouthMed WiA will support the beneficiaries of the grants during the realisation of the projects by providing capacity building activities and continuous mentoring.
The present call contains three lots:
- Lot 1: Research activities
- Lot 2: Training
- Lot 3: Awareness raising and advocacy
The amount available for the three lots is EUR 340 000. Any grant requested must fall between minimum EUR 80 000 and maximum EUR 100 000.
Applicants cannot submit more than one application. SouthMed WiA reserves the right not to award all available funds if the submitted applications do not fulfil the selection criteria.

A second call for proposals of SouthMed WiA will be launched in February 2018.
SouthMed WiA aims to strengthen the capacities of female professionals and operators of the audiovisual sector in the Southern Mediterranean region and to contribute to sustainable development and cultural diversity by enhancing the image of women in the film sector.
SouthMed WiA was launched on the 1st of February 2017 for a thirty-month period and is implemented by a consortium led by Interarts in Spain, as well as four non-governmental organizations from Belgium, Italy, Lebanon and Tunisia.
